Sustainables at Crescent Building Supplies

To produce Sustainable energy effectively you must ensure that the energy you are using doesn't compromise the needs of future generations.

Conservation of energy is the easiest to achieve, this can be done in many ways and save you money at the same time.

Recycling can extend the life of a source of energy.

Future Energy

There are several new ways of producing energy. The initial cost of the unit and it's installation costs should be balanced with the long term savings. The saving may not just be in cost but in the reduction of the impact it has to the environment.

WPL  is an internationally recognised leader in the design, manufacture and supply of standardised and bespoke environmental solutions for sewage treatment plants, trade effluent treatment solutions and rainwater harvesting and commercial grease management systems.

With full design, engineering, specification support, customer services and national servicing facilities, you can rely on WPL to assist you every step of the way, giving you total confidence in their products and complete peace of mind

The WPL RainRetain Premium domestic systems are designed to the highest possible standards, and use high quality tanks, pumps and filters. There are two complete systems available in this range, the Home system and the Garden system, in tank sizes 2700 to 6500 litres. Large systems of 7500, 9600 and 13000 litres use two tanks.

The turret system on the neck of the tank can rotate to allow the tank to be installed at any angle. This means the turret can be aligned to pipework independently of the tank itself, for easy installation. The telescopic lid can be tilted to suit ground level once installed for low visual impact. The excavation area is small compared to other tanks and doesn't require a concrete back fill.

The tanks are made of Duralen, a recyclable material, therefore, further reducing impact on the environment. A truly environmentally friendly system. Made by injection compression moulding, the wall thickness is equal in all areas of the tank, for stability, reliability and strength. Yet it is lightweight and can be supplied in two halves, making transportation and installation easy.

Uses for the WPL RainRetain System:

  • Toilet flushing

  • Laundry Garden irrigation

  • Car washing

  • General cleaning

The tanks have a 15 year guarantee and the pumps have a 2 year guarantee.

Solar Power at Crescent Building Supplies

Energy from the Sun is not constant but can still be a free source of energy. The Sun's energy is commonly converted into heat Solar Thermal or converted into electricity Photovoltaic.

Photovoltaic PV (Electricity)

Photovoltaic is a direct way of converting Solar Energy. The energy from the Sun is converted into electricity via Solar Panels. This generated electricity is changed through an inverter from Direct current DC to Alternating Current AC.

The panels can be situated off-roof (sits above the roof tiles) in-roof (forms part of the roof tile structure) or on a flat roof.

Solar Thermal (Heat)

Solar Thermal energy is normally generated indirectly.

The energy from the Sun heats up fluid that is pumped to a cylinder to heat water that is normally heated by a boiler.

It typically provides up to 70% of domestic hot water heating needs and is likely to save about 20% of consumer energy bills.

Wind Power at Crescent Building Supplies

Wind can be used in a number of ways to harness energy.

A Windmill is a good example of a Mechanical way of using the power to grind grain to make flour.

Wind pumps can be used to pump water. Wind Turbines are used to create electricity.

Packaging at Crescent Building Supplies

At Crescent we are conscious of our responsibility to reduce and manage effectively the waste packaging we receive from our suppliers and any we pass on to our customers.

Jumbo Bags

The Jumbo Bags we supply aggregates in are collected from site when used and are sent to our Uxbridge depot where they are compressed and banded ready for recycling. Cardboard and Polythene sheet packaging is also sent to our Uxbridge depot, compacted and banded for recycling. Even small changes can help the environment. Some of these changes are hardly noticeable, we changed the light bulbs in all our buildings on each site to energy saving.

A difference will be seen in the amount of electricity used, saving money, saving the environment. Because we have been getting more and more enquiries into energy saving devices and constructions, we have undertaken a project of training our staff about the various products on the market so that they can offer informed and valuable advice. We are also working with our suppliers in an effort to offer our customers the best possible products with the most cost effective solution.

Regulation at Crescent Building Supplies

As the Government gets to grips with the benefits that can be had by conserving energy and new ways of harnessing energy, regulations will be put into place in an effort to change people's outlook on energy saving. Understanding the regulations and being able to source the products that will enable the compliance with regulation can be a minefield.

Crescent have several years experience with specialist renewable energy systems, suppling complete Solar Thermal systems to Rainwater Harvesting tanks.

Energy Performance Certificate

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are needed when any building is sold, rented out, constructed or refurbished. EPCs give information on a building's energy efficiency in a sliding scale from 'A' (very efficient) to 'G' (least efficient). Every EPC also has a recommendations report showing how the homeowner could improve the rating. Only qualified, accredited domestic energy assessors and qualified, certified home inspectors can produce EPCs for domestic properties. They analyse how homes are constructed, insulated, heated and ventilated, and the type of fuel being used.

WEEE at Crescent Building Supplies

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive is now UK law. The legislation aims to make producers pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electrical equipment. The regulations also mean that suppliers of equipment like high street shops and internet retailers must allow consumers to return their waste equipment free of charge.

The amount of WEEE thrown away is increasing by around 5% each year, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.

Much of the UK's WEEE ends up in landfill, where the lead and other toxins it contains can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health.

Many electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save our natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending electrical goods to landfill.

Distributors of new Electric and Electronic Equipment (EEE) have a part to play in reducing the amount of WEEE going into landfill sites.

Crescent Building Supplies are obliged under these regulation to offer our customers free take back of their WEEE on a like for like basis when you buy from us a new Electrical or Electronic product.*

For example, if a customer bought a new EEE item from us we would accept their old WEEE item and prevent it going into a landfill site by disposing of it safely. Customers must return their WEEE item to us within 28 days of purchasing their new item.

Under the WEEE Regulations, all new electrical goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol.

Goods are marked with this symbol to show that they were produced after 13th August 2005, and should be disposed of separately from normal household waste so that they can be recycled.

*Crescent Building Supplies are only obliged to take back items that are used for domestic/household purposes, we are not obliged to accept any items used for commercial purposes. Crescent Building Supplies are not responsible for the cost of collecting any items.
